What is Reputation Management?

After I posted a scathing blog about a Facebook application someone named Sean added an obviously contrived comment to the post in an attempt to improve the tone towards that product. He was blatantly attempting something called ‘reputation management’ which in our Online World means to ensure that your personal or company name, or product/service receives positive results when searched for in Google (or other engines if you care about them).

So a search for that particular Facebook app obviously ranked in Google, which in turn meant that people looking for it saw my scathing comments; thus someone tried to redress the balance.

It’s not good for your reputation if when someone searches for you all they see is people slagging you off!

Now, you can do what Sean did and feebly attempt to answer the criticism by replying to the comments, forum posts or blog posts; or, a more successful but naturally more difficult tactic would be to ensure that nothing negative appears for your name when someone searches in the first place.

How could you do this? If you have sites like openly slate your name or product what can you do about it?

Simple, make sure that other websites rank above them. For example, if you Google my name (Darren Jamieson) you won’t see anything negative in the top 10 results.

Darren Jamieson

Now I don’t own all of those websites, I’m not even the Darren Jamieson in question on some of them, but there’s nothing negative about me there. Don’t think for a moment either that it’s because I’ve not annoyed anyone enough to try, I have ;).

No, it’s reputation management in action.

If you have a problem with your online reputation and would like to know what can be done about it, don’t post comments on the forums and threads in question from made up customers of yours saying how good your services are, that doesn’t work. Give me a shout at Just Search, I’ll advise you on what can be done.

SEO Providers? I don’t think so

Today I received a spam email from Nick Slevin from seoproviders.net. Nick asked if I needed SEO help to improve my rankings, and he sent the email to my address associated with the website TheTransformers.Net.

Get more traffic to your website using proven seo tactics. To learn more, please reply with the sites you would like to promote and the best way to contact you with the details.

Sincerely,

Nick Slevin

I’d normally delete an email like this without reading it, but after looking at the website for seoproviders.net, and realising the email address he’d sent the email to, I wanted to point out a few things.

Firstly, the website TheTransformers.Net ranks #1 in Google for ‘Transformers’. How exactly can seoproviders.net improve its ranking? Do they have some clever software that makes my website appear in people’s browsers BEFORE they search? Some sort of predictive search technology? I doubt it.

Secondly, look at the website for seoproviders.net…

SEO Providers

Seriously, go home Nick. This is the big leagues now.

SEChecking for your keyword rankings

I wouldn’t normally give something like this any exposure, or even any of my time, but while I was rooting around the ReviewMe clearing house I came across the site SEChecking that was offering a Search engine positioning service for a scalable fee starting at $19.95 per month, rising to $49.95 per month.

What this company claims to do is to monitor your position in Search Engines and send you daily reports based on your rankings. For this they charge the fees dependent on how many keywords you’re keeping track of.

Now what bothers me about this is you can do exactly this for FREE with services like Digital Point or even Web CEO. $50 per month seems a lot of money for something that can effectively be had for free elsewhere.

It doesn’t help their credibility when you view their blog and find just the two half assed posts on a default WordPress blog skin stating they’ve just started. This all looks a little too much like a cowboy operation to me. A Whois sees that the site is run out of the Czech Republic too.

Even the FAQ fails to instil any confidence that the site can actually deliver what it claims as it only has two points:

How many pages are scanned in search engines ?
Now there are scanned the first 10 pages (100 results) in search engines.

How often do you scan search engines for changes ?
Every day! Time of scanning is between 0:00am and 6:00am.

Seriously, I’d advise you to avoid SEChecking, there are far more trustworthy and cheaper (read free) options out there.

MSN ranks me #1 for ‘Transformers the Movie’

Here’s an interesting thing, an SEO related post from me. I know, this blog is supposed to be about SEO yet I rarely mention it. Well, now I am. Shut up and listen.

The random website generator known as MSN always seemed to ignore my Transformers related websites, despite excellent rankings on Yahoo! and Google. It’s as if MSN had some odd, random element to its algorithm. You don’t say!

Anyhow, I recently moved the Transformers The Movie website I own to a new host and converted it to WordPress, and would you credit it but MSN suddenly found it? Not only found it, but whacked it at #1 for ‘Transformers the Movie‘. Just for the record it’s also #1 in Live.com’s variation.

Now is this because I’ve moved to a UK based host, or is it the more indexable (nice word that) WordPress that’s done the trick?

To be honest whatever the reason, if being #1 in MSN for a result was worth two shits I’d be really excited. As it is it’s worth sod all, while I’m glad MSN has discovered my website I wish the general Internet using public would discover MSN.

Regional targeting with Google Webmaster Tools

This week Google added a new option to its Webmaster Tools allowing you to set regional targeting for your website. This is very useful because it answers the problem of having a non regional specific TLD hosted abroad still being able to rank for a regional search.

Google Webmaster ToolsFor example, the website featured in the screenshot is a .com hosted in Germany, but by allowing regional targeting as I’ve just done it will rank for a UK search.

Obviously you need to be very careful when making changes like this as you can affect your global rankings. For example the website WhatDVD.Net is also hosted in Germany but I won’t be regionally targeting that to the UK because I want it to rank for US based users as well.

Regional targeting is a great and welcome tool, but don’t shut out wider, potentially more profitable markets for it.

#1 in Google for Transformers

Less that 48 hours ago I put a new Transformers website live (www.thetransformers.net) as I finally made the switch from ASP to WordPress. This meant changing the hosting from 1and1 Internet, who are located in Germany to the new host United Hosting, who are located in the UK.

The change went smoothly, and the new site has already been indexed. What is incredible though is that the new UK hosted site has immediately shown up #1 in Google.co.uk for sites located in the UK under the keyword ‘Transformers’.

Previously being hosted in Germany with a .Net extension had excluded it from UK only searches, and it is ranked 1st page for ‘Transformers’ in a non country specific search, but now it has a UK home it’s #1.

Beat that!

Getupdated acquires Just Search

Swedish Internet Marketing company Getupdated has acquired Just Search, making us one of the largest companies in the online marketing business.

This is great news for Just Search and on a personal level I’m quite excited at the chance to renew some friendly rivalry with Getupdated’s Marcus Westberg who finished above me in last year’s V7n SEO contest. He placed 5th while I only managed a lousy 7th.

Let’s get it on!
