Transformers comic: The Beast Within

As you probably know I’m something of a Transformers fan. I have countless Transformers toys, run several Transformers websites, have contributed to Transformers DVDs and even attended the 2007 premiere of Michael Bay’s Transformers.

Transformers The Beast WithinYou get the picture, I like Transformers.

Back in 2004 I wrote a two part story for a Transformers comic which was published by Metrodome and given away with their Transformers DVD boxsets. The comic was called ‘The Beast Within Part 1’ and ‘The Beast Within Part 2: Consequences’. I only wrote the script, it was illustrated by the amazingly talented Dylan Gibson, who has gone on to a good career as an illustrator.

The comic was met with mixed reviews (at best) with some Transformers fans and websites being very critical. This one cites the fact that it was published as an error… wankers.

Anyhow, this week I found two YouTube videos from a guy who reviews Transformers toys, reviewing the comics. Incredibly he’s actually quite impressed with the comics, as you can see in the two videos below where he talks you through the storyline and gives his opinion on them.

Just thought I’d share this, it’s nice to get positive reviews.

  1. Your really being way too defensive. You should realise that bad reviews are a part of realising any form of expression. You have to learn to be a bigger person. If they think it’s bad then they are right. You would have to be really arrogant to think your work is universally great. And I read your
defense of your work and you seem to think it’s compressed story telling as opposed to just bad story telling. Having read the story and the reviews I can honestly say it really isn’t very good. Even the people who liked it didn’t seem to like it alot. You wrote what you wanted the characters to do and not what they naturally would do. I’m not trying to upset you but you should face the possibility that your work is poor. Just cause it was published doesn’t mean it should have been. Everyone makes mistakes. Take the feedback and be better.

  2. Thanks for the comments all the way from Ireland (you see, you can hide your name and email but you’re still traceable). So which Transformers acted out of character?

  3. i would like to know where I could purchase the comic book beast within by transformer. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

  4. Man I’ve been looking for that comic for years. I consider it to be the ultimate in collector merch. Wish to god I could it.

  5. Ok, I’ve also been trying to figure out what’s so horrible about this comic. There’s nothing terribly wrong with it that i can see. I’ve now seen the comic (impossible to find, but the youtube clips help) and the worst part of it is that it seems very rushed and not much chance to get into the story. Then I read that there was a limitation on the number of pages; so not the author’s fault. Can’t do much without the space.
On the other hand, a comic involving dinobot combiners is pretty damn exciting. Even if people HATE it, guess what…when it’s time to put their money where their mouth is, they are spending on the idea. How do i know? There are multiple 3rd party companies making dinobot combiners based on this design. and they are selling, and people are very excited about it. So…i like the dinobot combiner and i wouldn’t mind more comics about it!! let’s do it!!!

  6. I was trying to see if it can fit in to one of the continuities, if the characters are repaired afterwards.

    Please see my article
    Transformers multiverse
    on the transfanon website

    it shows all the continuities.

  7. Shitty, half assed fan fiction, that somehow menaged to be published officially. So glad everybody just pretends it never happened and ignore it existance. And limited pages doesn’t excuse this story from being crap. Simon Furman wrote plenty stories, that were only five pages long, and yet had begining, middle and end. It’s not hard.
