Abusive Home Delivery Network driver

This site has featured a number of posts about HDNL, also known as Home Delivery Network, now known as YODEL. Initially I posted about how a delivery of mine was tossed over a gate and left in the rain, and that post alone has generated nearly 500 comments from equally annoyed customers and also from HDNL drivers. Some of the drivers come to defend their employer, some come to admit that there’s a problem, some come to abuse people – all of which of course helps the website to rank even better in Google for HDNL, so thanks for that!

One driver however has been particularly fervent in his postings. Sometimes he uses the name ‘Matty’, sometimes he uses the name ‘Dan’, but he always uses the email address bigtreewitheyes@talk21.com and he says he works for HDNL in Newton Abbot, in the Heathfield depot. Dan, Matty, whatever he calls himself, has been posting comments on this site since December 30th 2009, so he’s obviously a big fan.

In that time he has made over 40 comments, most of which containing abuse of some form. Let’s have a look at some of the things that Matty, Dan, bigtreewitheyes@talk21.com, the guy who works for HDNL, or rather YODEL, at Newton Abbot, has said:

In response to one customer who complained via this website, Matty (or Dan) commented in January 2010:

What an idiot!

How do you know it was the same driver?

Plenty of rounds have 2, 3, or 4 vans.

By your posting, you sound like a real ignorant prick.

You sound just the sort of ignorant twat that would shout abuse at somebody.

Im surprised anybody delivers to you.

Please forgive the spelling too, as this guy’s not the brightest.

In the same month, this bastion of HDNL’s employment directed these comments at me:

My god, you are a petty, misserable excuse of a little man.

Its a bottle of wine, get over it you idiot!

You must be a real joy to live with, if of course, anybody actually does live with you!

Im sure Laithwaites will be so upet losing an absolute cock of a customer like you!

This post wasn’t even about HDNL, but our Matty/Dan thought he’d offer his opinions anyway.

When this post was added, where another HDNL driver labelled all of their customers morons, Matty/Dan chipped in with this comment:

Morons is abit lite….
Dickheads is a bit better!

So one driver with YODEL brands all of their customers ‘morons’ and Matty/Dan thinks that’s not strong enough, insisting their actually ‘dick heads’.

Matty/Dan got straight to the point with this comment:

Mr Daz shut the fuck up you pathetic piece of toilet scum.

Before following up with the rather polite in comparison:

I take it your a traffic warden!!

Bullied at school were you?

The HDNL employee then decided that going on a personal offensive was the best option, as his defence of Home Delivery Network wasn’t really cutting much ice with the dissatisfied customers on the site. He went on to add:

You need to do yourself a favour, get your ugly head away from the computer, pull back the curtains, and see some day light.
Theres a whole world out there you know!

Matty/Dan then turned his attention to some of the many customers who had posted on the blog, offending them too:

As an employee of hdnl, and knowing the policies as I do, I can honestly say I dont beleive a word you had just typed!

Maybe you had a late delivery and thats why your whining.

Get a grip woman!

After this Matty/Dan was pulled up his comments by a HDNL customer called Kate, whom he set about insulting with a frenzied vigour:

KATE you sound like a horrible person.

As for your rubbish about consulting a solicitor and QC (samething different job) about a non delivered parcel, your making your self look rather silly.

Your address doesnt sound very rural to me!
You are full of crap Kate.

And again:

You dont get it do you Kate.
I bet you have caused a fuss at the depot before, over your unreasonable demands havent you?
I dont get paid to put up with rude, abusive, mouthy, and threatening people like you, and if I have prior experience with a customer behaving like that, I wont take the parcel.
So maybe you should look at your attitude towards people, you obviously see hard working delivery drivers as a bit of scum that you can abuse.
Ive got news for you love!!
And its all bad!!!

Although Matty/Dan did find time to have a swipe at me in the same comment, he can multitask like that:

Mr Daz (wanker) I hate to break it to you, but out of the MILLIONS of parcels delivered every year, a few hundred complaints, whilst regretable, are just a tiny tiny percentage, with alot being made up of pathetic, the world owes me everything, type of people like yourself and bignosekate.

After his sideswipe at me, the Home Delivery Network driver went on the full offensive, abusing me for my job, no less.

Building websires = lonely nerds
You hide away from the world slagging off everybody, and everything.

Your a horrible little man, with no life.

‘losers’ like me ‘flock’ to your pathetic site to have a laugh at the pathetic complaints that people like you make.
It really is very sad.

The only public service I would like to see you involved with, is a flogging in the town square!

Matty/Dan followed this up with another abusive tirade:

I must say, being abused by a loser from behind a computer screen is really hurting my feelings!

I bet you hog the middle lane of the motorway, and refuse to give way to other motorists also.

As I said, a sad man, that feels powerful when hes hidden from the world, either locked in his car, or hidden in his bedroom.

There are of course many more comments on this site from Matty/Dan, and other employees of Home Delivery Network (or YODEL, as they are now) but I think this should suffice for the time being. This HDNL driver was also one of the more respectful and polite drivers who have commented on here, as at least he didn’t threaten to ‘knock ya wrag-head off…..u dick’ to someone with an Asian name.

What do you think about Home Delivery Network?

Darren Jamieson, aka MrDaz, is the Technical Director and co-founder of Engage Web and has been working online in a career spanning two decades. His first website was built in 1998 and is still live today.

  1. I will try and avoid HDNL when I am ordering something. When I am looking at something I need to get delivered I try and find out who the courier is. If it HDNL or whatever they call themselves I won’t order from that company if I have an alternative that doesn’t use HDNL.

As far as the comments made by Matty about myself he was getting close to being reported to the police for verbal assault. That can be a very serious crime and when used against some people classified as hate crime. If Matty is the sort of person typically employed by HDNL then they should expect visits from the authorities.

  2. All my stuff gets delivered from the Heathfield depo…Maybe i will meet him…

  3. @bignosekate: Dear Mr Policeman, somebody called me names on a website, please arrest him.

Dear bignose idiot, get a life and stop wasting our time!!

    Are Mr Daz in disguise?

@Mr Daz, well done.. copy/paste/edit.. top marks to you for having enough spare hours to be sad enough to do so… point proven! END

  4. Matty, I suggest that you look up the Equality Act 2010 and other related Acts of Parliment, You obviously know nothing about the law. Verbal Assualt can be classed as hate crime if against certain people (I come into one of those groups without going into details) and carries a prison sentance. You need to be careful about who you rude to and insult. You could end up facing prosecution. I suggest that you scale back the venom. If you talk to your customers like you do on here I am surprised you still have a job. In the company I work for you would have been sacked long ago and we often speak to our customers in very stressful situations.

  5. web designer vs delivery man… erm I wonder who makes the most… and I wonder what the “so simple a chimp could do it” job is.

delivery men,, you fail at delivering you have no comeback.

  6. oh and I had a delivery today.. well I say a delivery… the HDNL man couldnt even get into the building with a huge door that is always open… amazing.

I have had enough with these idiots, I have cancelled my amazon subs due to their use of HDNL and will be shopping elsewhere so I know I will actually get a delivery and not a poor excuse such as “I couldnt find the door”

  7. Thanks for the comments nixx; I’m an SEO though, rather than a web designer. It’s a tad more technical, and means I know how to ensure websites get found on Google – like, for example, if you were to search for ‘Home Delivery Network’… they’ll catch on in the end.

@Big Nose Kate – I don’t think HDNL will be sacking Matty/Dan for his abusive comments as this seems to be the way HDNL/YODEL does business. He’s one of their more customer focussed drivers.

@Matty / Dan, I’ve tried to explain this before but you don’t quite get it. This isn’t the result of some spare hours. This IS part of my job. I don’t expect you to understand, you’re just a delivery boy. I do expect you, however, to keep coming back and abusing customers as that’s what you do.

So, come on Matty / Dan, let’s have another of your best insults. Tell us HDNL customers what you really think of us. Let me and Big Nose Kate know what you’d say to us if you turned up on our doorstep with some crap we’d ordered online, just to inconvenience you.

    We’re waiting…

  8. I had a missed delivery today. Well i think i had one anyway because the note we have through the door of our shared house contains no names or details of what might have been delivered. Funnily enough this is one from the Newton Abbot depot, and had i known the delivery was through HDNL/Yodel, would have ordered from someone using a more reputable company.

Thanks for highlighting just how appaling this company is on your blog. I feel genuine pity for those who work there.

  9. I had a delivery from Yodel and my god how disorganised they were seriously pissed me off, I was supposed to get a delivery on Tuesday of a £750 laptop, i bought it as a birthday present for my brother, now as a professional with a 9 to 5 job, and a child to take care of plus bills to pay, waiting at home wasn’t so much of an option but I had to on Tuesday anyway, I waited all day from 7 AM in the morning till 9PM in the evening, nothing at all, checked tracking and it wrote unable to deliver customer not at home, left card.

Thats me losing £100 on tuesday by not being able to go to work, they said they would re deliver on thursday, waited all day, and guess what? Nope they didn’t leave a card, hell forget the card the laptop didn’t even leave their depo, needless to say fucked off didn’t even begin to explain how furious I was with them and gave them a nice bollocking over the phone and demanded that they deliver in the morning so I can atleast get to work for friday! (oh and thats another £100 gone)!

Friday comes and I was told it would be with me by 12 in the afternoon, instead I received the parcel at 9PM! What a piss take! And you know what it wrote on the parcel when I got it? It had a note telling the courier that it should be delivered in the morning, but he deliberatly made me wait all day for it! Needless to say I gave him a right bollocking and he wasn’t even interested and tried to give me trouble giving me the parcel by asking me for ID, then my phone number, and then staring down at my drivers licence for a fair while, then he gave my parcel and ID back, and gave me a pen to sign for it, so i rightfully told him to stick it up his ass and slammed the door on his face, I was just hoping he’d try to block my door to get my signature so I could call the police and accuse him of forced entry.

Then I called up the person I bought it off and gave him a bollocking for using such a shit courier for such a high value item, and the fact that I lost £300 fucked me off even further!, so thats my horror story with them!

I snatched my parcel out of his hand and chucked my licence at him,

  10. was offered “first class delivery” on a recent amazon purchase and stupidly assuming it would be royal mail (deliver within 3 days) i chose and paid for it instead of taking free super saver (ETA 3-5 days). wasn’t informed until i got the receipt page/email that i was actually getting HDNL who i had never heard of before but thought oh well at least i get tracking. googled the name to find the tracking sites and found all these 0/1 star reviews and on amazons forums there are dozens of threads with hundreds of posts complaining about the terrible service. it really sucks that you have to play roulette with amazon as to who delivers your stuff and if they’re going to have an option for ‘first class’ it should bloody royal mail first class not some mickey mouse courier.

drivers i appreciate some of you try hard despite being over worked but the ones who can’t be arsed and the rest of the company really need to sort their act out. its not just a few complaints on this one site, your company has major problems that other couriers just don’t (TNT, parcelforce, DHL and especially DPD have all done a fine job for me in the past).

  11. Not related to HDNL but I stopped a Parcelforce delivery driver on the street on the off chance he had a parcel I was expecting.

Here is a transcript of the conversation.

Me: Hi. Sorry to interrupt. I just wondered if you had a parcel for me.

    (name and address exchanged)

Driver: How come you weren’t in?

Me: It was meant to arrive yesterday but didn’t. I was in most of the day.

(the driver already has a parcel in his hands)

    Driver: Ken whit that is?

    Me: No?!

Driver: F***king dog food. Lazy c**ts cannae be c**ted going tae Lidl and expect me tae howf it up three flights o’ f**king stairs.

    Me: Oh right.

(looks around for parcel, throwing others, including one marked ‘fragile’, onto the floor of the van)

    (he finds the parcel)

Me: Do you need some ID?

Driver: Wi a name lik’ that, ye couldnae f**king make it up. Anyhow, I couldnae care less. Yer f**king lucky mate as wisnae even going tae load it into the van th’morra.

    Me: Great!

(hands me the pda to sign for the parcel)

Driver: Sign oan this. It’s “f**kin’ c**ted” so probably willnae even work. Pile o’ sh*te

    Me: There we go.

Driver: You lot around the “posh bit” are a’ the same. Can never get youse in.

  12. I have been waiting since Wednesday now for a 400 pound phone to turn up. And according to the self employed courier driver it was signed by my wife at a precise time when she wasn’t here and he’s said he has delivered it and its not here, now I’ve been phoning these people for the last 3 days and they keep fobbing me off. Now I work for parcel force and all secure and electronic devices have to be signed for. I have just got through to the depot de-briefer and he has just said now that the name isn’t spelt right and there is no initial. So now have to wait for the main manager to phone me and to find out what’s going on I hope the driver loses his job gets fined for this and I get something out of it for all the stress it has given me and my wife and the time I’ve had to take off from my delivering duties.

  13. nick im sorry about the parcel force driver I take it its up country as I can assure you my drivers aren’t like that down here kind regardes
